The Instagram app.
Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing and video sharing social networking application that allows its users to take photos and videos as well as apply filters to them. Along with Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, it has been surging ahead to become the world's fastest growing social network.
Teens’ social networking platform preferences are constantly changing with the development of more new apps. According to a semi-annual survey, Instagram has now surpassed both Twitter and Facebook to become teenagers' single “most important” social network. In the previous survey Twitter had been in the lead while in the two surveys before, Facebook was the first choice among social media app users (Watershed Publishing, 2014).
Facebook has plummeted from being the most important social network app for 42% of teens in Fall 2012 to just 23%. By contrast, the percentage of teens citing Instagram as their most important has surged from 12% to 30% in the same time period.
